Website, Google Business, Instagram: what an independent actually needs

The three channels do different jobs, and only one of them is yours. Here is what each is for — and what to skip.

Ask ten people whether an independent needs a website, a Google Business profile or an Instagram account and you will get ten confident, contradictory answers. The confusion comes from treating them as alternatives. They are not. They do different jobs, and exactly one of them belongs to you.

Google Business: where the search lands first

For «plumber near me» searches, the map results appear above everything else. A claimed profile with correct hours, a real phone number and a few photos is the single highest-return hour an independent can spend online. It is also free.

Its limits are just as clear: you get one description, no pages, no languages, and the layout is Google's, shared with your competitors two lines below. It answers «is this business real and open» — it cannot answer «is this the right person for my problem».

Your website: the only channel you own

The profile and the social account live on someone else's platform, under someone else's rules, and can be suspended by someone else's algorithm. Your site, under your own address, is the one place where you decide what is said, in which languages, with which photos — and where a visitor can read about your services, see your work and book or write without leaving.

It is also what the other channels point to. A Google profile with a website link converts better than one without; a social bio needs somewhere to send people. The site is not one channel among three — it is the destination of the other two.

Instagram (and the rest): depends on your trade

If your work is visual — carpentry, hair, food, design — a feed of real jobs is genuine proof and worth the habit. If it is not, a dormant account does more harm than no account. The honest rule: only open a channel you will feed. Nothing there needs to be daily; current beats frequent.

The order that works

  1. One page you own, saying what you do, where, and how to reach you.
  2. A claimed Google Business profile, linking to it.
  3. Social — only if your trade shows well in pictures and you will keep it alive.

Steps two and three are free and live on other people's platforms. Step one is the one this platform provides: your own site, your own address, online in an evening.
